Science and technology are the most important influences shaping the character of contemporary life, except for the economy. But even the economy is influenced by science. Science policy is an effort to deal with this reality.
“Policy” is a problematic concept that includes both políticas and normas. After considering the uniqueness of policy work, attention will turn to a distinction between science for policy and policy for science. This will be followed with a review of historical developments in the increasingly important interrelations between science and politics, plus analysis of contemporary issues.
Comparisons of the interactions between science and politics in the United States and Europe will be included.
